BUSHEY
HALL, BUSHEY, HERTS
8th
October 2006
Again,
just when you think you can relax and enjoy a bit of a break,
you get another invitation
to an event. Fortunately,
this was a local one and involved very little administration
and logistics to get to the event and take part.
Bushey
Hall was the home of the 8th USAAF Fighter
Command Headquarters and the old site still retains
many of its old wartime buildings.
Operation Ajax
is far from a
major event, which made it even nicer to attend without all
the logistics normally required to see elements of FAAA
deployed. For
the group,
the aim was to establish the KAPE (Keep the Association In
The Public Eye) display
again and to see if all the kit required doing that task
could be carried in a single jeep and trailer.
The event was
run over a weekend, however the detail from FAAA attended
the Saturday evening dance only and returned on the Sunday
to set up the display. The Dance was OK but suffered from
not having a dedicated 40’s DJ and to be honest the singer
was a bit dire, but entertaining
for the wrong reason,
I guess!
Arriving on the Sunday
morning,
having picked up Steve, the two jeeps travelled the short
distance from Steve’s house. Believe it or not Steve had
the roof off and
windscreen down,
which must have been a first since he got it!
(True - Ed!)
Although a
short distance from the RV point, it was a lot further for
Tony and I to follow in my Jeep also with the tilt down and
the screen folded flat.
There were many groups who we
knew taking part and some very interesting vehicles showed
up. The weather was very kind to us and we had a lot of
interest from the MOP’s
in
our little display. With many fine traders taking part also,
the event was a great success and it would be for certain an
end of season event for us in 2007 if they run it again.
The run home for Tony and myself was this time with the tilt
and screen up!
